Where for Welsh Republicanism?
Very rarely will you ever read, see or hear anything about Welsh Republicanism in the media. This isnt because theres some big conspiracy against it (its not important enough for that yet...), its because theres hardly anything being done to warrant a mention! Apart from a few facebook groups, the odd website and a couple of annual parades there isnt really much to report on.
The most notable of the annual parades are Rali Cilmeri, St Davids Day and Dydd Glyndwr. All far too stuffy for my liking with too much emphasis put on commemorating the history of Welsh Princes, which isnt really very REPUBLICAN when you think about it for a moment. Perhaps these events aren`t really meant to be republican,its just that alot of republicans, mostly very nationalist, attend them. But of the other types of commemorations, parades, events in Wales of a more socialist/republican nature, that usually occur around past revolts and uprisings, they dont actually get anything done either. Attended by a load of middle class lefties and local historians.
From what i see all the events whether they`re of the nationalist republican variety or the socialist republican variety just seem like either a big pat on the back or a big piss up-in reality, fuck all positive or forward looking gets done. Ive nothing against these parades and commemorations for the heroes, comrades, historical figures that are being remembered i think they have a very worthwhile place in the overall picture...but surely theres some kind of Welsh Republicanism that isnt constantly looking back on the past, that doesn`t involve laying a bloody wreath?
Theres nothing being done at the moment that does, could or actually would get the average Welsh person to care in the slightest. And why should they care they only really care about what effects them and their personal lives!
Surely getting out on the streets in protest at the cuts would galvanise alot more public support and media attention.
Perhaps campaigning for a Welsh Assembly with full powers, and one that isnt run by a new Welsh political elite thats not very different from their London counterparts, apart from the fact that they are here in Wales, would be a bit more worthwhile for Republican time?
Where is all the counter propaganda here in Wales against the recently announced royal wedding next year? Not only an insult to Wales but, an insult to the average working person everywhere in the kingdom!
Plans should be underway to stop the next investiture( they should have been underway since 1969!). Its not yet announced but its coming.
