Seeking Sovereignty The AIM way:

In 1972 during the historic "Trail of Broken Treaties Campaign" (see AIM Archives in AIM's official website at aimovement.org) to Washington DC, the Denver Chapter of the American Indian Movement under the leadership of Alice Black Horse, Hunkpapa Dakota; Rod Skenandore, Blackfeet/Oneida; and Vernon Bellecourt, Ojibwe/Anishinabe, designed a bumper sticker entitled, "AIM for Sovereignty." This was long before any of our Indian or non-Indian writers, educators, academics, intellectuals, or tribal leaders understood the concept of sovereignty as it relates to the powers and authority of tribal governments and true self-determination.

Sovereignty, of course, has become the basis of all forms of development, be it the strengthening of Indian governments, court systems, law enforcement, educational institutions, and, yes, casinos and bingo halls which brought about an infusion of much needed capital and all forms of economic development. Today many of our tribal leaders have either forgotten or never understood this reality. They think that everything fell from the sky like mana. Perhaps one day someone, somewhere will say Megwitch (thank you) to the many sacrifices of the American Indian Movement.

The American Indian Movement has always supported all sovereign Indian nation's absolute authority and jurisdiction over all Indians and non-Indians alike who violate the laws of any sovereign native nation.

Why Not Declare For a 'Symbolic State' as Cenedl Glyndwr - Cenedl Cymru Rydd maybe Embassy Glyndwr will declare for at Machynlleth on 21 Mehefin annually and on the Vyrnwy Estate and on Mynydd Pumlumon.  Alternativelly, perhaps as the 'Republic of Lakota', suggest make a Declaration of a 'Republic of  Cymru' on every English Crown Estate in Wales. That is called doing something not fantasing about it on fb or Day Dreaming about it annually down in Bae Caerdydd or as I remember and prefer to call it and why not TIGER BAY, yes?

HOME TRUTHS WELSH REPUBLICANISM WAS STUFFED A LONG WAY BACK AND THAT IS WHY IT NEVER CAME TO MUCH AND SADLY NEVER WILL AS A NATIONALIST ENDEAVOR.

Sadly Iolo's Republicanism and potential of a Radical Gorsedd as a possible 'Invisible' Republican Government was to be overwhelmingly  undone by the rise of Non - Conformity and thence a later Romantic Cultural Nationalism which still lingers on in Plaid Cymru and Cymdeithas yr Iaith Cymraeg. What of Cliff Bere's WRM I and later WRM II of Gareth ap Sion and Neil al Siencyn or the later WSRM of Robat ap Gruffydd and Tim Richards. Not bad attempts at building on the Republicanism of Iolo and other Welsh Dissidents but as for leaving a legacy, if that is in the beliefs of Mike Jenkins to be a poetic one coupled with Cardfiff Bay Republican 'Day Dreaming' then unfortunatly Welsh Republicanism as a long way to go unless one considers CYMRU SOFREN as a worthwhile alternative:

WRM I: STATEMENT OF POLICY FOR THE WELSH REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT - Can This Be Improved On?



If not you have no need of the Poets Republicanism of Mike Jenkins nor Leon Machen's 'Little Republic' Cardiff Bay Republican 'Day Dreaming' evening of Entertainment. What you do need is an education on Republicanism full stop, none better to give you that than the contributions of David Lawrence towards a Welsh Republican Cause as in previous and other posts. Other than this next steps in advance to a true Welsh Republicanism other than the above nor the 'Garibaldi' Republicanism of Balchder Cymru is the holding of rotating Welsh Republican Quarterly Colleges North, East, West and South. Becoming in time Welsh Republican Directorates as the foundations of a Welsh Republican Movement III. Courses required in Republican Philosophy and Theory towards practice in developing such a Welsh Republican Movement III it's Struggle and Campaigns but whom would organise such? I suggest possibly some Welsh Republican 'Old Timers' as Gareth ap Sion and Gareth Westacott, not I as I am fixed in my Socialist Republicanism via the Great Unrest 2012 Group but I understand that this might not suit those more of a 'Nationalist Republican' mind. I have no problem however in advancing the below as it might be the first step towards an alternative Welsh Socialist Republican Party, see:

WRM I MANIFESTO.

No movement that seeks to assert the fundamental historic and moral right of the Welsh Nation to freedom and independence can acknowledge any ties whether real or formal which tend directly or indirectly to bind Wales and her people in subjection to English or any external sovereign institutions. Wales is a nation and her loyalty is to herself, as her sovereignty is in herself and in her historic and undivided nationhood. We cannot, consequently, accept allegiance to the English Crown as a condition imposed upon or attached to our freedom and independence. 


Furthermore, the Welsh nation is essentially a community of the common people (y werin bobl). Therefore the movement that is to enshrine the spirit of our liberation and express and conduct the struggle for freedom must aim at establishing a Republic of Wales, which will be the symbol of our independence as a nation and of the democratic community of our people.



The people, that is, the so called common people, everywhere are striving towards a fuller and more fundamental democratic order based upon the recognition of the political, social and economic equality of all men, an order in which men and women shall enjoy a larger freedom and in which nations and national life will be fully recognized. The Welsh national movement must not only accept this as its basic outlook, but must become its interpreter and guiding spirit. To succeed in this mission the Welsh national movement must renounce the political forms, social canons and economic precepts associated with the decaying and discredited aristocratic-imperialist civilization, of which the English Empire is one of the best examples, and of which the English Crown is its classic emblem and protector. That civilization all over the world is under challenge from two directions, namely, from nations which are becoming conscious of their nationhood, and at the same time from men and women who are becoming increasingly conscious of the commonalty of all humanity. 



In a real democratic society, as distinguished from the formal democracy of our time, there are no gradations of rights, with larger rights for some and lesser right for others, either as between men in their society and work, or as between nations and peoples. The doctrine of social stratification with its superior and inferior classes, with its privileged and unprivileged and with its higher and lower orders must be renounced and its institutions abolished. 



The Welsh national movement of liberation must, therefore, of necessity be a revolutionary movement aiming at the overthrow of all those powers which hold men and nations in political or social or economic servitude. In our progress towards the goal of our freedom as a nation and a people a new social and moral synthesis will be created which will at once be the assurance and the expression of a new civilization. We feel that an acceptance of the forms and symbols of the old will effectively defeat the reality and substance of the new civilization.



We would, consequently, set forth as our aims and objectives for a free and independent Wales and declare as follows:



I. That Wales must be a sovereign democratic Republic subject only to such authority as it may accept or subscribe to as a member of the community of free nations.



2. That the King of England whether in person as liege lord or through any constitutional agency as monarch shall have no jurisdiction in or dominion over Wales or any person in Wales.



3. That no Welshman or Welsh woman shall owe allegiance to or be the subject of any liege lord or any other person.



4. That there shall be in Wales no hereditary or other titles or any other form of political or social or economic prerogatives or distinctions nor any privileges which are not shared or capable of being shared by all.



5. The people of Wales shall be a free people in a free country and not subject to any servitudes whether political, social or economic and shall enjoy in their society a status of unqualified equality. All class distinctions whether based on claims of birth or property shall be abolished.



6. The Republic of Wales shall be founded upon the unreserved recognition of the dignity and worth of the human personality and shall guarantee to the people of Wales without distinction the unrestricted rights of the moral person in order to secure and promote the fullest development of the individual person and of the national life.



7. It shall be the aim of the Republic of Wales to bring to consummation the idea of the democratic society in all fields of human activity and interest and establish the principle of co-operation as the democratic basis of our economy in the form of co-operative organisations or guilds in which the work, the responsibilities and the fruits shall be shared by all who work.



8. To the same end ownership shall be by and for use only. All the archaic forms of land tenure shall be abolished and land, houses and all other properties shall vest in those who for living purposes or for work use them either individually or in co-operation as co-owners.



9. The Welsh language as the native language of the Welsh people shall be the first and official language of the Republic of Wales but in the circumstances which have resulted in Wales through English rule the English language shall be used as a second language and as such shall be officially recognized.



10. It shall be a primary aim of the Republic of Wales to increase the acreage of Welsh land under food production and to establish a balanced Welsh economy by means of a vigorous policy of land settlement and development of rural trades and industries.



11. The Republic of Wales shall live in close association with all the other Celtic peoples and shall endeavor in every way to co-operate fully with all other nations and particularly with its near neighbors in the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and England.



12. The Republic of Wales must have and take its place and play its part in the international community of nations.

REPUBLICANISM AND EMPIRE - Comments by David Lawrence on the TV Series Capital Justice.

I only just caught an episode of this series this morning which was dealing with the fact that whilst the protesters in the Occupy movements are faced with a whole series of laws to arrest and control them the bankers that they are protesting against are more or less operating beyond legal control : the contributors to Capital Justice do not mention it indeed they are obviously unaware of it but they are debating issues at the heart of republicanism - this being the UK they are utterly ignorant of the fact that all of these things that they are ignorantly debating are the essence of republicanism which has a huge body of literature debating the politics of law and order. 

These were essentially the issues at the heart of the American and especially the French revolutions : this is more or less the reason that so much propaganda has been made in the UK against Republicanism for the past 200+ years - that the British Empire was built upon the criminality of international corporations such as the East India Company which was the source of the UK's wealth and republicans opposed this and made common cause across the empire with all of the subject peoples. However having successfully dismantled the European empires politically republicanism's remaining problem is that the condition of so many countries' independence was that the corporations retained the property that they had seized when they invaded and occupied those countries - and the UK protected its source of wealth by imposing the English Legal System on them which was indeed mostly created by and for the interests of the imperial corporations from the sixteenth century on wards. 

At the heart of the British Empire was a single key institution created in the seventeenth century - the Bank of England which raised the money to fund the military part of the project and upon which the mercantile bankers that funded the enterprise of exploiting the conquered territories and the peoples enslaved by military conquest became dependent. Whilst the UK's military occupation of these conquered territories has ended the governments created by ' independence ' have all too often merely been acting as proxies on behalf of the old European empires, oppressing their own compatriots and taking a share in the imperial corporations' loot and continuing to practice the criminality that the original ' cosmopolitan ' republicans opposed. Why has Cosmopolitanism ceased to be a popular politics in Europe ? Because our societies benefit from the present situation just as our ancestors benefited from slavery which provided an increased material standard of living at the expense of the poverty, misery and deaths of people unseen and unheard of.
